NUBC '08 THEME:
The Human Use of Human Beings in Medicine and Science

Liberal arts colleges excel in broadly educating undergraduate students in the full range of the arts, humanities and sciences. As befits the first liberal arts college to host NUBC, Union College's theme will be The Human Use of Human Beings in Medicine and Science. This theme reflects the ideal of "medical humanities" encompassed in the ASBH's name by embracing art, drama, literature, films, and the media, as well as the humanities and the social and natural sciences. It includes three specific sub-themes:

  • Portrayals of the Human Use of Human Beings in Medicine and Science in Art, Drama, Literature, Film, Mass Media and the Web (e.g., in paintings like Thomas Eakin's the Gross Clinic and the Agnew Clinic; in dramas like W;t, etc.)

  • Historical Reflections and Case Studies of the Human Use of Human Beings in Medicine and Science (e.g., the abuse of human subjects in medical research)

  • Controversies Over the Human Use of Human Beings in Medicine and Science (e.g., stem-cell research involving human embryos)

  • The conference is sponsored by

  • Rapaport Ethics Across the Curriculum Initiative
  • Union College PHILOSOPHY DEPARTMENT
  • Ephemeris, Union College Undergraduate Philosophy Journal
  • Union Graduate College/Mount Sinai School of Medicine BIOETHICS PROGRAM
  • ASBH -- American Society for Bioethics and Humanities
  • The John Conley Foundation for Ethics and Philosophy in Medicine
  • The Sidney A. and Esther Leifer Family Foundation
